Scholastic Call for Submissions New 2016 Scholarship Opportunities for Creative Teens

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition initiative for creative teens, are now accepting submissions from students across the country in grades 7–12. For 93 years, the Awards, presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, have identified the early promise of some of our nation’s most accomplished visionaries and encouraged young artists and writers to pursue a variety of creative career paths and endeavors. In the 2015 program year, a record-breaking 300,000+ works were submitted for adjudication at the regional level, with more than 1,900 public, private and home-schooled students receiving national recognition. Each year, exhibition, publication and scholarship opportunities are made available to students honored through the program for their creative work in 29 categories, with opportunities expanding each year.

Adobe Announces 2015 Creativity Scholarship Awards

Adobe, as part of its commitment to the next generation of creatives, today announced this year’s class of Adobe Creativity Scholars who will receive scholarships to help continue post-secondary education and creative pursuits. Chosen from 12 countries around the world, the 25 students selected demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership and global awareness. All of the scholars have participated in the global Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) program, which enables young people to harness media-making and storytelling skills to address social issues they care about. Adobe currently supports 75 students through the Creativity Scholarship program, which launched in 2013.

Scholarship and Financial Aid Scams on the Rise Need money for college? Doesn’t everybody? With tuition bills skyrocketing, and room and board going through the roof, students and their families are looking for creative ways to finance a college education. Unfortunately, in their efforts to pay the bills, many of them are falling prey to scholarship and financial aid scams. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, unscrupulous companies guarantee or promise scholarships, grants or fantastic financial aid packages. Many use high pressure sales pitches at seminars where you’re required to pay immediately or risk losing out on the “opportunity.” Some unscrupulous companies guarantee that they can get scholarships on behalf of students or award them “scholarships” in exchange for an advance fee. Most offer a “money back guarantee” – but attach conditions that make it impossible to get the refund. Others provide nothing for the student’s advance fee – not even a list of potential sources; still others tell students they’ve been selected as “finalists” for awards that require an up-front fee. Sometimes, these companies ask for a student’s checking account to “confirm eligibility,” then debit the account without the student’s consent. Other companies …

Starbucks and ASU Offer Unprecedented Four Years of College Education with Full Tuition Coverage

Starbucks Corporation and Arizona State University today announced that Starbucks College Achievement Plan, first introduced in June 2014, will now offer 100 percent tuition coverage for every eligible U.S. Starbucks partner (employee). As part of its commitment to redefine the role and responsibility of a public company, Starbucks developed this program in partnership with ASU to create additional pathways to opportunity for its partners. Full tuition coverage was previously available to juniors and seniors, but now all eligible part-time or full-time partners can apply for and complete all four years of a bachelor’s degree through ASU’s top-ranked online degree program. In addition to partners receiving full tuition coverage, the company is offering faster tuition reimbursement – now at the end of each semester.

University Teams Leverage Technology to Help Nonprofit Organizations Solve Challenges Student teams from Cornell University and Georgetown University have been named winners of the 2015 Accenture  U.S. Innovation Challenge. The annual competition, launched in 2012, gives students an opportunity to develop solutions for challenges faced by nonprofit organizations. The winning teams are then paired with Accenture management consultants who work with the students on a pro-bono basis to implement their ideas. This year, the program will help nonprofit organizations Ashoka and World Vision International meet their growth and development goals.
