Survey Shows One In Five Attorneys Would Have Chosen Career In Business Instead Of Law

In lieu of practicing law, many attorneys would have pursued a career in business, education or science, a recent survey by Robert Half Legal reveals. One in five (20 percent) lawyers interviewed said they would have chosen business management or marketing careers if they hadn’t become attorneys. Academia/education; STEM (science, technology, engineering and math); and finance/economics careers ranked second, with each category receiving 12 percent of the survey response.

One Third of Lawyers Expect to Increase Hiring of Entry Level Associates

The job market for newly minted associates is showing signs of improvement. Nearly one-third (32 percent) of lawyers recently interviewed for a Robert Half Legal survey said their law firm or company plans to increase its hiring of entry-level associates in the next 12 months. Five percent of lawyers said they expect to decrease hiring while 60 percent anticipate no change in hiring activity.

Litigation To Generate Greatest Number Of Legal Jobs Slightly more than one-quarter (26 percent) of lawyers interviewed for a new Robert Half Legal survey said their law firms or companies will be adding legal jobs in the first half of 2015. Sixty percent of lawyers said they expect to only fill vacant posts, while 7 percent said they would neither fill vacant positions nor create new ones. Just 1 percent of respondents anticipate staff reductions in the next six months.
