Check Eligibility for Overlooked Tax Benefits The Internal Revenue Service today urged taxpayers whose tax-filing extension runs out on Oct. 15 to double check their returns for often-overlooked tax benefits and then file their returns electronically using IRS Free File system. About a quarter of the 13 million taxpayers who requested an automatic six-month extension this year have yet to file. Although Oct. 15 is the last day for most people, some still have more time, including members of the military and others serving in combat zone localities who typically have until at least 180 days after they leave the combat zone to both file returns and pay any taxes due.

U.S. Organizations Report Highest Compensation Spend in 39 Years

Variable Pay Drives Record Spending; Companies Controlling Fixed Costs Research from Aon Hewitt, the global talent, retirement and health solutions business of Aon plc, shows total compensation and spending for U.S. employees  reached a record high of 15.8 percent in 2015, with the majority of funds allocated toward variable pay, such as incentives, bonuses and cash awards. According to Aon Hewitt’s 2015 U.S. Salary Increase Survey of 1,214 organizations, salaried exempt workers will see base pay rise by 2.9 percent and variable pay increase by 12.9 percent in 2015. By comparison, total compensation and spending budgets for salaried exempt employees was 11.4 percent in 1996, with 3.9 percent accounting for salary and 7.5 percent accounting for bonuses. “Organizations are under immense pressure to keep costs in line to remain competitive, and as a result, we are seeing more than 90 percent of companies shifting more of their spending to variable pay because this type of strategy enables them to recognize and reward performance without growing their fixed cost,” said Ken Abosch, broad-based compensation practice leader, Aon Hewitt. “Pay is a top engagement driver for employees, and as the market continues to improve, organizations will need to differentiate through variable pay …

IRS Issues New Reporting Guidance for Applicable Large Employers


Some of the provisions of the health care law apply only to applicable large employers, which is generally those with 50 or more full-time equivalent employees. The law requires ALEs to file information returns in 2016 with the IRS and provide statements to their full-time employees about the health insurance coverage the employer offered. Monthly Tracking To prepare for the reporting requirements in 2016, applicable large employers should be tracking information each month of 2015, including: Whether you offered full-time employees and their dependents minimum essential coverage that meets the minimum value requirements and is affordable. Whether your employees enrolled in the self-insured minimum essential coverage you offered. Annual Information Reporting The first statements to employees must be provided by January 31, 2016, and the first information returns to the IRS must be filed by February 28, 2016, or March 31, 2016, if filed electronically.
