Employment rates for U.S. single mothers was 73 percent during the mid-to late-2000s, according to researchers from the Luxembourg Income Study Center at the Graduate Center City University of New York. Despite this relatively high employment rate, 87 percent of employed U.S. single mothers were working 30 or more hours per week, with just 64 percent working the same hours in comparative countries.

Vet Technician

Veterinary technologists and technicians work in animal hospitals, private clinics and laboratories. The primary duties of a vet tech are to perform medical tests under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian to diagnose or treat animal illnesses and injuries.

There is an expected growth rate of 52 percent for vet technicians between now and 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. Single mothers and non-traditional students can work toward certification as a vet technician at pennfoster.edu, where you may qualify for financial aid.

Salary depends on the part of the country one lives and works in, but a vet tech can earn as high as $51,000 a year working in New York City, PayScale.com notes.

Physical Therapist Assistants

Working under the direction of a physical therapist, you’ll be responsible for motivating patients to push themselves and overcome physical struggles. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for physical therapist assistants is expected to increase by 45 percent (much faster than average) between 2010 and 2020.

Pharmacy Technician

The primary responsibility of a pharmacy technician is to assist licensed pharmacists in dispensing prescription medication. Technicians work in pharmacies in hospitals, as well as those in grocery and drug stores. Positions are available on both a full-time and part-time basis. The BLS predicts a 32 percent increase in employment of pharmacy technicians from 2010 to 2020. Median annual wage for pharmacy technicians was $28,400 in May of 2010. However, health technologists and technicians can earn nearly $40,000 per year.

Massage Therapist

As a massage therapist, your job would be to manipulate the soft-tissue muscles of the body using touch to relieve pain, reduce stress, rehabilitate injuries, increase relaxation, and improve overall well-being. There are many different work environments for massage therapists, including private offices, fitness centers, spas and hospitals.

More than 30,000 professionals are expected to join the market for massage therapy by 2020, and with great pay, rewarding responsibilities and excellent job prospects, it’s easy to see why. Indeed.com reports that the average annual salary for a massage therapist is $64,000, and can even start as high as $83,000 in a populous region like New York City.
